IPL Laser Therapy Q & A

What is IPL laser therapy?

Also called a photofacial, intense pulsed light (IPL) laser therapy is a form of treatment that harnesses the power of light energy to transform your skin. Technically, these treatments do not use lasers but pulses of light to create heat in the targeted areas of the skin. Laser therapy uses concentrated beams of light to alter skin at the surface layer or in the deeper layers.

The form of light used in IPL treatments is less focused than in laser therapy. This scattered light penetrates the deeper layers of skin, creating heat but leaving the surface of your skin at a safe temperature. North Valley Wellness uses the M22™ IPL treatment platform from Lumenis® for these services.

How can IPL laser therapy improve my skin?

IPL treatments can deliver impressive results for many common skin issues. Some of the complaints that bring people in for IPL photofacials include:

  • Acne
  • Stretch marks
  • Redness from rosacea
  • Broken blood vessels
  • Freckles
  • Lines or wrinkles
  • Dark spots
  • Sun damage
  • Hyperpigmentation
  • Birthmarks

IPL is especially well-suited for treating issues linked to abnormal pigmentation. The pulses of light are drawn to areas of concentrated pigment, creating heat in those specific areas. Best of all, you can improve in multiple conditions with the same treatment. This makes IPL an excellent investment all around.

What is the recovery process like after IPL laser therapy?

Many people report feeling as though their skin is sunburned after IPL therapy. Your skin might feel sore or swollen for a few days, but your body quickly adjusts. Ice packs or a cool cloth can help reduce discomfort, and over-the-counter pain medications can also be helpful.

Avoid using harsh skin care products or makeup while your skin heals. Sunscreen is important, however, and should be worn even when you don’t expect to spend much time outdoors.

Your treatment will be spread over multiple sessions, your visits will be spread out over a few weeks to give your skin time to adjust. Expect to see the full results of your IPL treatment a few months later.

We also offer for less stubborn pigmentation, a gentler in-motion IPL with our Motus AZ+, ask at your consultation which is better for you. If you have additional questions or concerns about IPL laser therapy, call North Valley Wellness to book a visit. Online scheduling is also an option and allows you to book from the comfort of your home.
